DIY Organic Wall Hanging
There's something so right about bringing nature into the home in the form of art or furniture. This cluster of cut logs caught my eye today. Nice and organic! And removable adhesive picture hanging strips allows everyone to try...even if you rent!
Hop on over to Apartment Therapy if you want to take a full tour of Liv & Jeff's home in California.
Until next time...

DIY Baby Shower Gifts and Decor
A few days ago you got a sneak peek at some of the DIY decor and gifts I was working on last week for a friend's baby shower. It's not a Swedish tradition to have a baby shower before the baby is born (they think it is bad luck to celebrate before a birth), so we do our best to keep our American tradition alive among our friends - and we typically get lots of compliments from our Swedish guests as well. We had a lovely day and I think my projects were a success. Because we can't buy baby shower decorations in the stores, there is no choice but to DIY-it. But honestly, I'd have it no other way. Here's what it looked like.

I found the shutter in a junk pile drive-by on the day that I went thrifting in support of Mr. Goodwill Hunting's 'I >3 Thrifting' event in July. I cleaned her up and chose a fabulous blue color that reminds me of doors and window frames around Paris. I used it for the baby shower, but it is going to be a permanent installment in my daughter's room - so more on that project coming soon.
It's hard to see in the photo because of the reflections on the glass frames, but I had such luck that the baby's name was Carter and he is going to be the 3rd baby - thus the idea for ABC-123. The C is highlighted and says 'C is for Carter', and the 3 is highlighted and says '3 is a magic number'. Printed them off my printer with the background scanned from a traditional Swedish children's rhymes and songs book. Here's another look at them before I tied them to the shutter. Mom-to-be-D liked them so much that I left them for her to hang in the baby's nursery.
Even though I absolutely love the results of this next project, I found myself thinking half-way through, "What in the world am I doing?" This C is made from hundreds of single hole-punched dots from a paint chip card with five different shades of blue. Then, each dot was glued one-by-one (you can't just toss them on or you'll get the white backside on there as well - and that wasn't what I wanted for this project). Hours! It took hours to complete. Got the idea from Ally at Cut Out and Keep. And although it was a gift, it also served double-duty as baby shower decor.
I also made a reusable banner - the baby-to-be is a boy and we had the name, so it was fun to include that in the party decorations. I'll also post soon about what I did with this banner to make it reusable (for someone other than a child named Carter).
Took the idea of the fingerprint trees being used as wedding guest books and used it for our baby shower guest book. Our mom-to-be-D then received it in a frame (at the end of the shower) as a simple wall hanging for the baby nursery. We also had a 'tips and advice' tree where guests could leave notes for mom-to-be-D.
A friend and I had decided months ago that we were going to try our hand at this next wall hanging that we'd seen on the popular English handmade market website, Not on the High Street. We used a simple heart punch, various scrapbook pages in shades of blue, and our best design layout capabilities. One space is left for the baby's name, and another is for the date of birth. It turned out fabulous and several of the guests were even interested in making their own versions for various other types of events.
We had a great day, the DIY decor gave us the feeling of a real American baby shower, and most importantly, our guest of honor was happy. Best of luck for mom-to-be-D for a quick labor and delivery!
Until next time...

DIY Baby Shower Decorations and Gifts
This week has been all about making decorations and gifts for a friend's baby shower. The idea of baby showers doesn't exist yet here in Sweden, so a few of us Americans are doing our part to start spreading the tradition within the borders.
I volunteered to work on the decorations because I've been so gosh-darn inspired by all of you party decor DIYers out there - so I wanted to try my hand at it. I'll take photos at the shower tomorrow and post them this weekend. Until then, here's a little teaser.
One of my gifts is a wall hanging for baby's room. That's HUNDREDS of hole-punched dots from paint chip cards...glued on one-by-one! These kinds of projects/gifts are a true labor of love because they take some much time and patience. And I could use more of both!
If you like looking at party decor DIY ideas, check back in later this weekend for the full party decor reveal.
Until next tiime...

I'm really pleased with how this decoration turned out. They are having a boy and naming him Carter, and he is their 3rd baby. So the ABC-123 idea worked perfectly. I scanned pages from a classic Swedish book given to newborns by their local city library. I reduced the opacity of the A-B and 1-2 pages, which gave the C and 3 a highlighted feel. C is for Carter, and 3 is a magic number. Then I used some basic glass frames from IKEA that I had in my 'one day I'll use these' stash. Today was the day!

Repurposed Plates and Classic Art
Well, this certainly is an altered perspective. I found myself really having to stare at these a while to fully take in the concept. Repurposed plates and classic art paintings merged together.
There is an asymetry about the placement of the plates on the wall that throws me for some reason...but at the same time draws me in to linger a while. The paintings are not complete, but the mind fills in the blanks as if seeing the full painting.
I'm on the fence. What about you? Want to see more? Hop over to the Little Owl gallery and look at the altered perspective gallery.
Until next time...

Recycled and Repurposed Beer Bottles
There's a fun post in the archives over at Salvaged Grace from 'way back' in January 2010 that is as current today as it was in 1907 when some creative soul built a home from recycled beer bottles in the Nevada desert due to the timber shortage. Did you see that? 1907! Not 2007...1907!
It's a fun roundup of recycled and repurposed beer bottles so I hope you'll hop over to have a peek.
I would love to know if this house is still standing. Wouldn't that be just fabulous?
Until next time...

Trash? Or Art!
Here's what you'll see from across the room. I would absolutely love to have a version of this artwork in my home. I love the soft colors and the lack of a distinct image. Can you guess what it's made from?
I simply adore and admire anyone who takes trash / discarded items / junk and creates something so spectacularly beautiful. This 8' x 5' art piece is made of approximately 40,000 pieces of junk mail. JUNK MAIL!
I also loved listening to Amanda Nelsen, the artist of this artwork, as she talked about her work with 'found paper'. Take a look if you want a quick 5 minutes of feel-good inspiration.
Looking for recycled / repurposed paper projects for your own project inspiration? Then you'll want to take a peek at 25 of the best DIY repurposed magazine projects that I found across the Internet.

Here's a closer look. Does it look familiar yet?

I'm a loyal recycler (thanks, Sweden, for making it a part of everyday living), but I'll be thinking twice next time I get a stack of junk mail...can I make something this beautiful?

Repurposed All Around
I saw this sweet little candle chandy hanging in a cabin on our recent mini-vacation. It was owned by a Norwegian woman who brought it back from Tennessee. I love the fact that 'repurposed' is universal. She's sending some Norwegian interior design websites - so hopefully I'll have some fun things to share from their corner of the world.
If you're interested in having a look at some pics of the Swedish coastline from our mini-vacay, and learn a little about Swedish culture at the same time, hope over to my 'life story' blog at The Accidental Swede for a quick read.
Until next time...
